Summer Opportunities to Boost Future College Apps

Students may be looking forward to the end of the academic year as a respite from their studies and harried schedules.  But they should also be making plans to have a productive summer as it’s an ideal opportunity to enhance their future college applications.

Summer is the perfect time for students to engage in activities that will provide knowledge and experiences in the field they are considering for their college major and future career. Opportunities abound through internships, volunteer work, and pre-college programs.

Those seeking a future in the field of medicine may seek a shadowing opportunity at Hunterdon Health or a position with RWJ Barnabas Teen Volunteers. Students can also use the summer to train, and get certified, as an EMT for their community.

Students interested in pharmaceutical sciences have an opportunity to experience the field through the University at Buffalo Pharmacy Summer Institute.

Those who prefer to engage in fascinating volunteer work can do so from the comforts of home through virtual opportunities provided by Zooniverse.org. For one project, volunteers view underwater videos to identify and count sharks in the waters around New Zealand, which is important for the conservation of sharks, rays and skates.

Another project utilizes volunteers to participate in a new particle search at CERN. Students help ATLAS scientists look for signs of massive, long-lived particles produced in the Large Hadron Collider – the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator operated by over 100 companies.

Students eager to get a preview of the college experience can choose from hundreds of options, either in New Jersey or across the country. At The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) course options are offered in a multitude of fields: 2D Animation, Game Design, Music Technology, Artificial Intelligence & Wireless Communications, Engineering in Health & Medicine, and more.

There’s likewise a wide range of course options at Rutgers University, including the THED (Toxicology Health & Environmental Disease) High School Summer Program and SLAAM (Student Learning & Achievement Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering) Summer Academy.

Programs in a variety of fields are also offered at other New Jersey colleges and universities, including Stevens Institute of Technology, Seton Hall, Rowan, Stockton, and Montclair State.

Summer may be a time for vacation and relaxation, but it also provides the perfect opportunity for students to gain experience and knowledge to bolster their future college applications.
